I've never used the lens, so i tin can't comment, except to say that Tokina is a good manufacturer.
As to the toll, I paid $650 for an excellent+ Nikkor 80-200AF-D f/2.8 ii-ring well-nigh five years ago (with original box and leather example), so I think $500 for the Tokina may be a flake steep.

Re: Tokina 80-200 f/two.8 ATX Pro
Personally, I concur. In that location are a ton of used Nikon fourscore-200 f/2.8 models that might be some of the best built, sharpest lenses made. I'd take whatever of them over a Tokina. I admittedly know little of the Tokina, but would withal stand by that. The Tokina would have to be one special chunk of drinking glass to be the equivalent, in my opinion.
For effectually $1100 you tin can notwithstanding buy the Nikon 80-200 f/2.viii AFD brand new. It might be the best bargain in the Nikon lineup equally far as pro-grade drinking glass is concerned.

Exist conscientious - some of the 80-200 F/2.eight version of Tokina has extremely bad CA. I do not know which one, simply I have seen the image shot with one. It is worse than terrible.
The sharpness alone was fine though.

Started off w/ a D80 & a Tokina fourscore-200 f/ii.eight ATX Pro
In respond to Reid • Dec 25, 2011
I started off using this lens west/ a D80, and used the combo to accept some of the images in my portfolio (PM me and I'll send you a link).
Of class, when I sold them to purchase a D300 west/ a Sigma 50-150mm f/ii.viii, it became easier to get good images. Information technology became even easier yet with a D700 and 70-200mm VRII.
My point:
It is capable of generating good images, but west/ some drawbacks. The AF is super s-l-o-west. It doesn't have prestige, and people at the local camera club may look down their noses at you lot for beingness able to simply enjoy photography despite not having The Latest Technology.

I had trouble selling mine. I started off at $400-ish, and wound up taking $350 later on well-nigh 2 weeks. Mayhap it was the fact that the box didn't fifty-fifty accept a spider web accost on it for Tokina! There was something else that narrowed it downward to existence from the mid-ninety's when a certain President was chasing skirts.
I have a friend with a copy in first-class status and I'm thinking about buying information technology. He'south thinking information technology's worth $500.

I used a transmission focus Tokina 80-200mm f/two.eight with a very similar optical formula for about 20 years with film cameras. It was a competent performer, only non quite up to even the older 80-200mm f/2.8D Nikkor.
Personally, I think $500 is optimistic.

Thanks for the replies.
Thank you for the replies, I really appreciate information technology. Early on on in my dslr days with Pentax the Tokina lens was a fleck of a holy grail considering of the lack of offerings from Pentax. I will stay away from this one and aim a bit higher with a D version of the aforementioned with Nikon.
Thanks again and Merry Christmas if you're jubilant today.
